Village of Vicksburg Public Notice
Issued: July 15, 2025
Advisory: Avoid Total Body Contact with Water at Sunset Lake Park
The Village of Vicksburg has received notification from the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department regarding elevated levels of E. coli found in surface water at Sunset Lake Park.
Water sample results collected on Monday, July 14, 2025, indicate levels of E. coli that exceed Michigan’s Water Quality Standards for total body contact recreation. Specifically:
- The single sample result was 603.73 E. coli per 100 mL, exceeding the state limit of 300 per 100 mL.
- The 30-day geometric mean was 157.4 E. coli per 100 mL, above the allowed threshold of 130 per 100 mL.
What This Means:
Total body contact with the water (such as swimming, diving, or submerging your head) is not recommended at this time due to an increased risk of illness. Signs have been posted at Sunset Lake Park to alert the public.
Next Steps:
New samples will be collected on Monday, July 21, 2025, and updated results will be available by Tuesday, July 22, 2025. Once the water quality meets state safety standards, the advisory will be lifted and signs will be removed.
The Village will continue to work closely with the County Health Department and keep residents informed.
